Primary Decision Maker
Born into the First Family of American mountaineering, mountain climbing is in Peter Whittaker’s bloodline. His uncle Jim Whittaker was the first American to reach the summit of Mt. Everest in 1963. His father Lou (Jim’s identical twin) founded RMI in 1969 and led the First American Ascent of the North Face of Everest in 1984.
Peter has been guiding and climbing for over 40 years. He first climbed Mt. Rainier at the young age of 12, began guiding professionally at 16, and has logged 240+ ascents of Rainier since then. He has completed the Seven Summits and led over 4,000 clients on hundreds of expeditions around the globe, from Rainier to Everest.
We are a small, dynamic company where each team member is essential in bringing the logic off the mountain and into our product. Our key players are masters of wearing multiple hats and putting their passion for the mountains to work.
With 15 years of experience developing product for technical brands, Diane Sheehan Egnatz is our all-around product design guru. In addition to interpreting the guide team's ideas, she also leads a team of local professionals to bring our product to life. When not driving Peter nuts with her wild ideas, Diane spends her time in the mountains, whether climbing big glaciated peaks or playing on more mild objectives in the Cascades. Climber + Designer = best of both worlds.
Kerry Samudio is the glue that holds us together. Kerry’s role covers a variety of areas from operations to marketing, and accounting. With over 20 years in marketing and business management, she is no stranger to teamwork and making things happen. Kerry is most at home in the mountains, whether snowboarding, hiking, or just playing in the backcountry, keeping the work balance in check is a priority.
In addition to being an RMI guide, Jess Matthews is our in-house MBA who tackles everything and anything thrown at her, from copy writing to inventory management and then some. She has a great passion for the outdoors, helping and coaching others, and working in the mountains. Jess spends most of the year mountain guiding in the Northwest or in Alaska and enjoys skiing in the winter.
Steph Bennett is a sourcing super hero and savvy backcountry split boarder. With over 12 years experience and an MBA, Steph spends her time charming our supply chain partners and helping to bring our design concepts to life. Not content to just sit at a desk and chat with factories, she spends equal amounts of time in the mountains - snowboarding, trail running, and mountain biking.
Our team of guides work with some of the top Northwest designers and developers, collaborating every step of the way.
Many of our guides spend over 200 days per year above the tree line. We work through constantly changing conditions and terrain, across every season, and in every latitude. We are immersed year round in these environments we call our lab, and know exactly what our gear is up against.
